Heavy rain over Christmas 2015 led to the partial collapse of Tadcaster Bridge which connected the two halves of the town.
The project
The stabilisation of the flood affected Tadcaster Bridge to allow the safe repair and reopening of the bridge after the collapse.
The challenge
To provide a safe solution in a restricted access working area. There were also environmental concerns and a tight programme.
The solution
The installation of 12 inclined piles on pier 5 (the one that suffered the most damage) and six vertical ones between the inclined ones. We also installed 35 piles to construct the secant walls for the cofferdam along with 20 bearing piles for new pier bases. We were then asked to install a further 12 inclined Pali Radice piles to the existing Pier 6 from bridge deck level through the pier to compensate for any differential settlement that could occur once pier 5 was stabilised. Works were undertaken using two crews working 12-hour day and night shifts over two visits to site, ensuring these additional works were also complete in time for the bridge opening.
